Dad 3D Printed Prosthetic Hand For His Son And Other Kids For Free
Fathers are real time problem solvers! Whenever a child needs something, fathers get a sign and are there for helping them in no time. They try to be of help at each and every opportunity that lies before them. Fathers play a significant role in every child’s life that cannot be filled by others. Michael Campos was one such father who wanted to be of help when his son Carter needed him the most! Carter was born with a limb deformity. He was born without his right hand.
After consulting the doctors, Carter went through a 12-week ultrasound. Doctors didn’t find any change and discovered that his right hand wasn’t developing in a way that it was supposed to be. At that time, it didn’t pose any problem to Carter. He was able to do everything that other children did. It wasn’t generally bothering him. He didn’t seem to mind that he only had one hand. Yet as he grew up, he started learning how important it was to have a right hand.
In July 2016, Carter asked for help to the most trusted person in his life, his father. Campos was giving him a bath and Carter asked if he could build him a hand. Campos was heartbroken. He had seen his son grow without a hand and now that he wanted it, he was heavy-hearted. He so wanted his son to get what he wants but that was difficult. He couldn’t deny as he was the only one he trusted. He responded saying that he will figure out everything and get that soon.

With all his perseverance, Campos started doing his research and came across a design for a 3D printed hand. It was from an organization called Enabling the Future. Campos got hope that he could bring a smile on his son’s face! He contacted a local 3D printing laboratory. He explained them everything. Campos got to know that the people running the lab had all the knowledge and were well-versed in printing prosthetics. Lab technicians were all excited to help Carter get his hand!
The hand made a huge difference in Carter’s life. He could handle everything so easily. Seeing him, Campos realized that there would be so many children out there with a similar deformity or any other limb difference that couldn’t afford a printed prosthetic as it involved massive cost. There would be many that may not have access to a 3D printing lab. Campos wasn’t satisfied after fulfilling Carter’s promise. He took an initiative to start an organization that could help such kids. The organization was named as Claws from Carter.
The organization provided free prosthetics to its recipients. All the cost relating to materials, printers and even shipping was covered entirely by donations. The aim was that no kid suffered only because he/she couldn’t afford it. Campos concluded saying that he was proud that he could make the world a better place for other children with ‘different abilities’ with the help of his son.
