The world has seen a great change in technology over time. There are new devices being built and programmed to fulfill the requirements of people. If we ponder over it, a few years back, was it possible to talk to our friends living in the other part of the world on a video call!

All the technology you are surrounded by, at this very moment, was just a part of someone’s imagination a few years back.

The technology offered by Google is not a secret to anyone and many types of research have been successful because of the advanced system of the company.

Recently, the cloud computing system of Google was utilized by Emma Haruka Iwao from Japan who works with the company. She has been successful in breaking the Guinness World Record of the value of Pi. Her work is commendable!

Can you imagine the number of decimal places that she reached while working on these calculations? Iwao computed the value of Pi to 31.4 trillion decimal places! Yes, that far. To be precise about the number, it is 31,415,926,535,897 or π * 10^13.

All this was accomplished on March 14 which is celebrated as Pi Day and no, it wasn’t a coincidence. Google had aimed at achieving this record on that particular day. Their cloud infrastructure had a huge role to play in this which the world knew after Google disclosed the data!

This previous Pi record was set by Peter True who calculated the value up to 9 trillion digits in 2016. After that, Iwao made a jump to 31.4 trillion digits setting a new record this year.

What is pi actually? Pi is defined as the value that comes as a result of dividing the circumference of a circle by its diameter. For convenience, the value of Pi used in normal calculations is 3.14. The next few decimal places are hard to memorize.

If you are wondering the actual value after her computation, we would like to tell you that you would be able to speak the 31.4 trillion number in 332,064 years! This was revealed by Iwao in an interview.

Talking about time, this whole calculation lasted for 121 days before arriving at the final number. The amount of data involved in this was 170 terabytes in the presence of 25 virtual machines. Those are some big numbers, right!

There are always certain theorems and algorithms involved while running such complex calculations. In this case, Chudnovsky’s formula was applied by Iwao which sped up the estimations.
She said in an interview with BBC, “There is no end with pi, I would love to try with more digits.” That shows how fascinated she is by Pi!

Google’s cloud computing prevented any obstacles and constraints to emerge during the process. Google’s blog post stated, “We ran 25 nodes for 111.8 days, or 2,795 machine-days (7.6 machine-years), during which time Google Cloud performed thousands of live migrations uninterrupted and with no impact on the calculation process.”

Iwao is excited after this achievement and so is Google! It will be thrilling to watch what Pi has in store after this! There is no end to the decimal places of Pi and we don’t think any value would satisfy the curiosity of people!
