The Rise of Dream Babies: TikTok trend sheds light on subconscious desires
It's not uncommon for people to have vivid dreams about babies but it seems like lately young women all over the internet have been sharing their experiences through the popular social media app TikTok. They're dream babies: babies that exist only in their dreams. These dreams are so realistic that when the women wake up they feel as if they have lost something important.
The hashtag #dreambaby is now trending on TikTok with 4.8 million views. The women who share their dream baby stories say they are not interested in having children but they can't help wondering about the meaning behind these dreams.
Lauri Loewenberg is a professional dream analyst who has studied dreams for 26 years. She says that women from all walks of life have these kinds of dreams and that they are often a reflection of a desire to nurture. "Humans are wired to be caregivers so dreaming of having a baby is our psyche's way of expressing that need" she says.
Hailey Case is a college student who recently dreamed that she had a baby. The experience left her emotional as the dream felt so real. "It is a little scary that emotions in dreams can carry over from the subconscious with that kind of intensity" she said.
According to psychologists dreams could be a way for people to deal with grief or unacknowledged emotions in their lives. They could also reflect daily preoccupations or help people find solutions to problems. And as Loewenberg suggests there might even be a mind-body connection where these dreams signal that our subconscious is guiding us towards the goal of having children.
Psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman says that while often these kinds of dreams do not necessarily mean a physical pregnancy is imminent they can signal a desire for a change. "The dream may be a message from a woman's inner child or from her future self telling her it's time to grow up and become more responsible" she says.
As the world changes and people increasingly search for deeper meaning in their lives dreams and their interpretations can provide a window into the subconscious mind. "Dreaming of babies can mean different things to different people but generally they represent a new beginning" says Loewenberg. "They remind us of our own potential for growth and transformation."
One of the reasons these dream baby TikToks have become so popular is because they allow young women with conflicting feelings about having children to explore their emotions without judgment shame or unsolicited advice. Dream interpretation offers a chance for women to process these emotions safely and talking about them on social media connects them to a larger community of women who may be experiencing the same thing.
As Loewenberg points out while dreaming of having a baby does not necessarily mean someone wants to become pregnant it does mean they want to nurture something new and that could mean a new hobby pet relationship or career direction.
Dreams have always fascinated people because of their mysterious and often symbolic nature. Even though they are not always easy to interpret they can offer insight into the workings of the human mind. As more people share their dream baby stories it's clear that dreams are one way that people can gain a deeper understanding of their own desires feelings and motivations.
