Ever Heard Of A Burning Crater? This Unusual Occurrence Called “Door To Hell” Was Explored And The Results Are Surprising
If you are looking for a “Door to Hell”, then there is one in this world you are living in. Don’t think too deep, it’s just a name given to a crater present in Turkmenistan!
The Karakum Desert has a Darvaza Gas Crate concealed somewhere in its vast area which was actually discovered 40 years ago.
How the Crate came to life in that area is the question here!
When Soviet scientists were looking for oil, they discovered this Gas Crate, but the oil rig they were using broke down while they were in the middle of the oil hunt.
Now, this incident of the oil rig collapsing and coming apart created a cloud of tension over the heads of the scientists. The gases in there were highly dangerous and if liberated, they can cause serious harm to the environment and people.
What they did next was a decision taken under pressure and haste. They set it on fire hoping that the entire thing would disappear after burning. We all know that never happened! It is still giving out “light”.
The crater has since been a source of curiosity and the researchers want to unravel the mystery revolving around this 30 meters deep and 69 meters wide crater which is burning at 1000 degrees Celsius temperature at some places.
This keen interest in the “Door to Hell” led George Kourounis to it in 2013. His explorer mind was not ready to calm down until he witnesses the fire crater himself, especially when he heard that the government is working on extinguishing the fire completely.
Kourounis made his way into the crater with all the right equipment with a rope coiled around his body hanging from a point above. He descended 100 ft. down and gathered some elements from in there to be investigated later.
One shocking revelation was made after he was successful in his task and it was the presence of bacteria at such high temperature. That was quite unexpected!
He went in with a lot of questions and came back with many of them answered! The world needs to thank him for taking up this challenge.
He expressed his feelings on this by saying, “It was exciting, adventurous, dangerous, a world first and a contribution to science. The expedition had everything I love.”
He was glad to “visit” a place where he was the first one to go. It was surreal for him! His explorations have no bounds and he continues to feed his curiosity by taking up such adventures.
